B'tX Tarot - The Fool by stayka B'tX Tarot - The Fool by stayka
This card is my contribution for the B'tX Tarot project [link] by :icondouble-g:
Here's the whole card set so far: [link]

Arcanum 0: The Fool

Traditional meanings:

The Fool is either the first trump of the Tarot or the last one, thus the card shows a completely freed mind, either in the beginning of the spiritual journey or at the end of it. I use to put The Fool in the beginning, as it symbolizes the beginning of the journey to the knowledge of the deeper mysteries of life. The Fool is the newborn child, free of all prejudices, fears and sins. Usually The Fool is accompanied by some beast (dog, cat or crocodile) that stands for the animalic self. The Fool holds the white rose of purity to show that he is yet beyond the base passions that led to the fall.

The qualities of the Fool are curiousity, impatience, beginnings, optimism, belief in one self and wisdom of innocence.

Traditionally, The Fool is connected with the Zodiac Sign Aquarius and the Planets Uranus and Neptune.

Imagery of my card:

My rendering of the card depicts MetalFace. Normally he is an enhanced human who more or less sold his soul to the Machine Empire. Here I depict him without his cyborg parts, but having those lying on the ground just in front of him.

The Fool is about new beginnings and a state of innocence - so depicting MetalFace before he took the choice to "improve" himself might be very fitting, with those cybernetic parts lying in front of him just as the danger which is normally shown by the dog/beast. And as his choice might be considered not well thought out and foolish, it also shows the negative side of the card - foolishness and naivité.

Behind him one sees a landscape with green hills and a sea - nature and natural lifestyle that MetalFace left behind due to his choice, while before him is just sand and rocks (the Machine Empire is located in the Gobi desert after all). By the way, I put the sharp outlines around the cyber parts to emphasize their artificiality.

MetalFace as character for this card is interesting as he symbolises both the purity before his "fall" and also the purity he regained after his redemption when he sacrificed himself to gain the Piece of the Sun for Karen (where he was shown without his cyber body in the anime, too) and finally achieve to shine from his human self. So this imagery works both for the Fool as beginning and ending card of the Arcana - for the latter one only needs to imagine him turning back from the desert to the green hills again.

That serie made me cry, with that sad end Y_Y, .....and Kurumada kill Fao ¬¬ my lovely Fao
I don't know why, Kurumada make that all his series ends like that, with sad endings ........ but he is good U_U

Yeah. But I think this end gave the series a greater impact. And the Earth was saved after all, so it is not only a sad end. The Shireishou and Teppei acted on their beliefs and thus created a miracle. I think what is impressive in Kurumada's series, that is the fact that even bad guys have a chance for redemption - Metalface's sacrifice was as least as powerful as the last stand of the Shireishou.

Me too! - By the way, as you are a fan of Fou (as I am, by the way) - the other tarot card I'm doing will show Fou as "The Hierophant" :D (I was lucky that I was early and could secure me two of my favourite characters!)

And by the way - you might want to check out this: [link]

Interesting piece of work.. I never really understood the illustrations of tarot cards cause they are soo enigmatic. They require a good sense of interpretation of symbols and abstraction, it's complicated. And I didn't read nor see BtX either so I'm a bit lost with such a personal interpretation of the "fool" tarot card xD. But I like the way you mixed a realistic background to the 2D character ^^.

Thanks. Well, it is indeed a bit difficult to appreciate that when you haven't looked neither into Tarot symbology nor into the anime series from which this characters is coming from.

I tried to summarise the meaning of the card a bit in the description, so hopefully that helped a little. About the character - well, you might imagine a Sci-fi version of DeathMask, then you have him nailed down pretty well. :)

That's why I decided to draw him without his cyber parts. Fortunately it worked both with the B'tX story and with the Tarot symbolism. (But I had to think hard about an excuse to do this in the first place!) :D

Well, B'tX was the series that Kurumada Masami wrote after Saint Seiya. It has quite some similarities, but it is set in some non-descript near-future and this time the fighters don't have Cloths, but B'ts, intelligent flying robot companions in the form of mythological creatures.

Here is some information on the series: [link]

And my screenshots of my favourite characters: [link]

Ah, okay, then I'm content. :)

So, the next card will be started ASAP. I'm still pondering about the proper motiv, but I think I will find an idea in the next hours!

By the way, about winning the contest - seeing all the other entries there I feel somewhat intimidated XD I think there are many gorgeous artists taking part there so that my chances are tiny! (And by the way, I do keep my fingers crossed for you, too!)

Indeed. Teppei didn't realise that Metalface was more affected by Madonna's death than he let show at first and his outbreak was due to the fact that he hurt so much and needed some target to vent his pain.

But what I found really fascinating was that Metalface redeemed himself when he sacrificed himself to get the piece of the sun for Karen at Kamui island, as that came somewhat of a surprise to me.

well, but in the end he at least died happily. it was really beautiful. though it was weird to see him cry for Madonna. I guess even the bad guys have their soft spot somewhere ^^

Well, he obviously did spend quite a while with Madonna as companion, who very likely was the only being that actually cared for him - and this only sank in when he realised that he lost her forever.

IMO this also marked the turning point when he decided that he wanted to make Madonna's death count at least and show that her sacrifice to save him wasn't in vain. (Interestingly in the manga he died when he got the piece of the sun and Madonna managed to reach Kamui as last effort to give Karen that piece.)

I guess because they thought it might be more interesting to have Karen meet Metalface once more. In the manga, Karen just stumbled over Madonna's head (amid some more wreckage of her) who gave her that piece of the sun. I like the anime version better even though it is not really logical how Metalface could have gotten to Kamui Island after Madonna's death.

Absolutely. I rewatched the episodes for my Tarot cards and I must say I have discovered that I liked B'tX better the second time I watched it. I really have to re-read the mangas (and order Vol.11-16 in French or English - especially 15 interests me as I'm not sure I understood it completely in the Japanese version - but from what I understood, Metalface seems to have been turned into a cyborg because of Karen.)
