Description

This picture was drawn for a contest at Animexx.de [link] where the host of the contest asked people to draw red-haired anime and manga characters. As she didn't want original characters, I thought I might draw my favourite space opera and pulp sf hero Curtis Newton aka Captain Future - after all, it was this cool character that prompted me to draw anime in the first place.

The above picture is a synthesis of the anime character design of Takuo Noda and Toshio Mori and the description Edmond Hamilton gave in his novels:

"Curt Newton was a tall, well-built young man. His unruly shock of red hair towered six feet four above the floor, and his wide, lithe shoulders threatened to burst the jacket of his grey synthesilk zipper-suit. He wore a flat grey tungstite belt in which was holstered a queer-looking pistol, and on his left hand was a large, odd ring."
(Edmond Hamilton, "Captain Future and the Space Emperor", p.10)

As I was asked what this ring is about - here's where it was first mentioned in the novels:

"Curt Newton held out his left hand. On that hand he wore a ring with a curious large bezel. At its center was a little glowing sphere of radioactive metal, representing the sun. This was surrounded by nine concentric circular grooves, in each of which was a small jewel. The jewels represented the nine planets. There was a tiny brown one for Mercury, a larger pearly gem for Venus, and so on. And the jewels moves slowly, circling the little glowing sun. This unique ring was known from Mercury to Pluto as the identifying emblem of Captain Future."
(Edmond Hamilton, "Captain Future and the Space Emperor", p.44)

One more thing I love about doing science fiction art - I can draw fantastic planetscapes for them. That's something I miss when doing fanart for Saint Seiya, as that usually takes place on Earth.

PS: And yeah, I admit it, Captain Future did influence my chars from Stardust vs Blackfire quite a bit. XD
